Yeah, we know — if you’ve kept tabs with Immersive this past month, then you’ve already learned much about Jack Fowler and his grungy trio Flower. But we caught up with the multi-talented frontman in a stable and healthy state, after a chain of caustic encounters nearly drove him to take his own life back in December. “Pitiful,” the closer on Flower’s recent Death By Internet EP, offers a glimpse of the dejection weighing him down during that bleak winter, but only a fleeting one. So the video for the track, also shot and produced by Fowler, opens the window further: what does a suicidal mindset look like?
On the surface, the setup seems quite simple: man in black plays guitar before a computer. Sure. But the details here tell the story: bags under the eyes, blank stares, hunched posture. Also, Fowler fades in and out from the chair, as if on the verge of erasing himself. The whole screen, too, cuts out with sporadic glitches, conflating the technological breakdown with the neurotic malfunction of suicide. And — see how stacked this symbolism gets — that whole tangle of human emotion with tech-mediated interaction ties back to the central tenets of Death By Internet.
So, in short, this “Pitiful” clip is more clever than you’d think from the thumbnail. And while it’s still just a glimpse, it’s a compelling one, and a promising synthesis of Fowler’s talents into a singular vision.
The video arrives as Flower is preparing to head out on a short tour up the East Coast and part of the southeast. The 10-day trek doesn’t include any local dates, but according to their website, there are additional dates to be added, so who knows what’s to come.
