Clocking in at a daunting 39 minutes, “Twin Moon” is far more than just some casually released standalone single. Even by Cave Bat’s loose, exploratory standards, it’s a deep, vast, continuously morphing soundscape that requires a heavy investment from the listener. I’m not a big fan of the term “background music” as it applies to ambient and drone because it implies that such music can’t also be immediate and assertive. But given the track’s prolonged running time and the way it languorously migrates from section to section, it’s difficult not to allow one’s mind to cascade into oblivion as it wanders through this psychedelic rabbit hole.

Here, everything seems forever in flux. Synths percolate beneath the surface before swelling into distended canopies of textured noise. Frazzled drones expand and contract leaving behind pockets of tension that are never fully resolved. Melodies are scarce, serving as signposts to help orient the listener, if only momentarily. This is a cosmic journey, to put it plainly — epic in scope, disorienting, and constantly evolving. The only way to make it through is to relentlessly plunge forward; just try and not to lose yourself along the way.
