It’s one thing to find a young band that is capable and confident in their songwriting, able to craft engaging songs full of youthful verve and sharp hooks. It’s another thing entirely to discover the same group is equally adventurous, willing to assume risks and plumb the depths of their art. Newcomers the Pellys predominantly play a melodic brand of jangly surf-punk, and their debut single, “Shiny Things,” proved they had a capacity for merging the emotional with the cerebral. But “Hail Jake,” the title track from their upcoming debut EP, takes a deeper and more expansive approach, further illustrating that this isn’t a band that will be content pursuing the easy and obvious.
Because, really, where do you start with this track? Is it the opiate stumble and slur of the opening verse? The jubilant blast when everything finally launches full-throttle? Is it the mix of hazy vocals and rousing hooks? The blistering guitar solo? There’s so much going on here, and a lot of it feels unhinged and ready to splinter off from the source, but the band keeps it together just long enough to ensure their manic, wide-eyed anthem lands safely intact.
