While electronic duo We Roll Like Madmen may have recently relocated to Atlanta, they’re not exactly strangers to the scene. Formerly of Columbia, South Carolina, the group has performed regularly in Atlanta for several years, enthralling local dance enthusiasts with their idiosyncratic blend of hip-hop, neo-house, and lush, pop-leaning soundscapes. They’re one of those rare bands that cut across several genres and cultures, so it’s no surprise they’ve found a home in the city’s vast musical melting pot.
WRLM is currently putting the final touches on their upcoming full length, AF, and recently dropped the LP’s first single, “Always Late.” It’s an eccentrically contagious track, one that lures you in with a simple skittering beat and electronic handclaps before wrapping you up tight in a wild assortment of bright textures and propulsive tones. But while the atmosphere is nothing short of giddy and playful, the duo aren’t content to merely craft an effusive club banger. When the vocals finally hit near the song’s conclusion, they sound subdued, injecting a feeling of calm reflection in what is otherwise an invitation to rave it up.
Is it fun? Yes, of course. But it’s also an undeniably cerebral cut that showcases WRLM’s impeccably sharp instincts and pristine craftsmanship. It’s that dichotomy which has endeared the group to Atlanta audiences, and hopefully one that their upcoming LP will carry forth in spades. Check it out below.
