The new single from Athens trio Vincas is a fever dream of psychedelic swamp noise. It’s nasty and brutish, a drunken slur of song that stares at you side-eyed while pissing in some seedy back alley. It’s the soundtrack to a Harry Crews novel (most likely A Feast of Snakes), with all the accompanying Southern darkness and depravity that entails. But mostly it’s a dark song for depressing times, and—holy shit—do I love it.
The track opens with a buzzsaw riff that reminds me of the Folk Implosion’s “Natural One” distorted and distilled into something far more ominous and primal. But it isn’t until Chris McNeal’s full moon howl enters the fray that the group’s bad-trip deliriums really spring to lurid life. Comparisons to Australian post-punk legends like the Birthday Party and the Bad Seeds are all apt, but there’s something uniquely compelling about Vincas’ tales of violence and perversion. The creeping tension; the ugly, distempered lurch; the tangled wall of swirling, fuzzed-out guitars—it’s all there in all its sleazy, fetid glory and damn if it ain’t beautiful.
