Like most everything they do, Mothers just released a new video for “Copper Mines” with minimal fanfare, unveiling it this morning via a short and simple Facebook post. But the band’s nonchalant demeanor doesn’t prevent the video from being a wild ride and an amusing foil to the dark and intimate nature of the track.

“Copper Mines” was one of the first singles released for Mothers’ debut album, When You Walk a Long Distance You are Tired, and since it was one of the strongest songs on the record I was surprised it didn’t receive the visual treatment much earlier. Apart from the delicate and brilliant imagery of the track, it best encapsulates Mothers’ ability to mask tenderness with aggression. Between Kristine Leschper’s quavering organic delivery and the mechanical strokes of the rhythm section, “Copper Mines” is Mothers at their most deliberate and confessional.

The video was directed by Ryan Ohm of Chicago-based Weird Life Films, who has a wealth of experience in surreal videos and has worked with everyone from the Orwells to Casket Girls. It stars Masood Haque who takes an post-dental office journey under the effects of nitrous oxide, and experiences everyday life from a wide variety of perspectives, including a short tribute to the Big Lebowski dream sequence.
