Pallas

Despite playing shows for a year, Pallas has yet to release any studio recordings. Instead the band has focused on honing their ecstatic art rock in live settings. The four-piece is an example of balance and collaboration, a sparkling mix best exemplified by Valentina Tapia’s expressive bass lines and Danielle Brutto’s powerful vocals. Transferring the critical details of their temperamental energy from the stage to the studio will be a test for the group, but it’s one they seemed poised to confront with wit and efficiency. Though a release date hasn’t yet been announced, Pallas will soon release Location 13, their debut 12″ (at 45 rpm) on Designer Medium Records. The sessions were recorded with Atlanta’s own Graham Tavel in mid-2016, and Pallas will release two of the songs as a cassette single in February. The band will also be touring with Hellier Ulysses in March, but according to guitarist Zane Durfee, “We are headed to some undetermined zones in the North… or maybe it was the West. We might drive straight into the ocean and hope for the best.” – RR

Pay To Cum

Back in October, we caught a whiff of Pay To Cum’s pummeling mix of early D.C.-style hardcore and reggae, and we’ve been doing our damnedest to pay attention ever since. More than just an homage to their namesake, Bad Brains, the group’s four-song demo revealed a near-instinctual understanding of pacing and dynamics that lent each cut an almost seismic intensity. The demo was quickly followed up by “Moonlight You,” a four-on-the-floor burner with an anthemic breakdown that proved their early success was no fluke. Already the band’s name is popping up on an abundance of club and house show flyers, and with a new LP, Band in Atlanta, slated for release sometime in the coming months, you can expect Pay To Cum to continue tearing shit up in 2017. – AS

Repulsory

Repulsory

With talent packed tightly into every nook and cranny of the scene, new bands usually require time to gently tug at our collective ears. Repulsory has opted to yank them off. Boasting members of sorely missed local favorites Mangled and Spewtilator, the death metal trio have come out swinging for 2017. With a blazing three-song demo and a packed-out first show under their belts, Repulsory are already booked to play Lexington, Kentucky’s third annual Blood of the Wolf Fest in March. Their impeccable musicianship and pretense-free stage presence make them a welcome and enjoyable addition to the city’s metallic roster. Be on the look out for an EP later this year. – Tyler Findlay

Thousandaire

Thousandaire

Let’s agree less is more because that’s all we may get from emotive recluses Thousandaire. Steeped in the ’90s post-hardcore heyday sound of Unwound and Slint, the band’s lone demo carries a weight and depth many bands simply never achieve. Brooding yet lackadaisical, the demo’s three songs wander from sedated reflection to full-on, cathartic battering ram with organic ease. This may be a result of the band’s motives. Bassist and vocalist Andrew Wiggins (Hawks, Caesium Mine) relayed that the band has no clear plans nor do they desire to muddy their process with obligatory self-promotion. A new album has been recorded, but the trio is in no rush to put it out. If you feel teased, find some solace in the fact that at least someone out there is still making music for themselves. Take it or leave it. – TF

worlds greatest dad

Catapulted by the strength of their Boredom Blues EP and an appearance at this year’s Wrecking Ball ATL, worlds greatest dad have gained significant traction with the city’s burgeoning indie and emo base. Last year, the trio decided to scrap a nearly completed five-song EP after a spark of new inspiration sent them careening into new creative territory. Regarding the decision to start anew, guitarist and vocalist Maddie Duncan offered without hesitation that the integrity of the band’s music is her ultimate priority. In December, the group released a holiday-themed split with Chattanooga’s Formative Years, which showcases their newly-honed vision. Accompanied by a cover of the Used’s “Alone This Holiday,” the pair of new songs offer a one-two punch that is simultaneously more direct and daringly vulnerable. With an LP planned for later this year, put your money on worlds greatest dad making waves in 2017. – TF
