Atlanta rapper Michael Myerz has taken to calling himself the “krust rap king,” which, for what’s it’s worth, is a descriptor that fairly suits his grimy, off-kilter rhymes and seemingly bottomless confidence. But “Sweet Creams,” the first single from Makeout Creek, his collaborative LP with local beatsmith AyOh, is one of the more conventional tracks he’s released in recent memory. And by that I don’t mean staid, or boring, or predictable, or any of those things. What I mean is this sounds like somehow who’s relying more on traditional rap skills like cadence and internal rhyme schemes than on obscure references and surreal lyrics. Even the video is for the most part devoid of his usual weed-inspired dream sequences and weirdo rabbit holes. And that’s a good thing. In the past, Myerz has declared he wants to be rid of the nerd rap stereotypes, and this is one way to do precisely that. Does that mean I want to see the end of his mad hatter approach? Definitely not. But sometimes you need substance to trump style because, as we all know, cream rises to the top.

Michael Myerz will perform tonight at his birthday bash at the Clermont Lounge alongside Zruda, Day Old Man, and AyOh. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $10. 21+.
