With a sound that borrows heavily from classic rock and blues while still keeping a toe dipped in the murky waters of ’90s grunge and alt-rock, Brother Hawk have long been able to maintain a diverse fanbase that has allowed them to grow exponentially without much in the way of PR or promotion. Word of mouth will always remain the most effective and efficient means of gaining traction, and it seems that with every new record and passing tour, the four-piece band from Atlanta win over new listeners at every turn.
The group’s upcoming album, Big Medicine, is due out next month, and in anticipation Brother Hawk recently premiered a video for the title track via Creative Loafing. Shot in the swamps of Big Haynes Creek near the home of frontman J.B. Brisendine where the band rehearses, the video captures a natural splendor that somehow serves as an apt metaphor for the group’s expansive, widescreen sound. There’s a rugged beauty, as well as a kind of soulful rustic charm that seeps into your bones like a cool mist rising off the marsh at dawn. The best thing to do is to sit back, take a deep breath, and soak it all in.
Brother Hawk will celebrate the release of Big Medicine on Sat., May 28 at the EARL. Playing in support are StoneRider, who also celebrate the release of their new LP, Hologram. Athens rocker Tedo Stone opens the show. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $10 in advance or $12 DOS.
