Look, we know we throw a lot of new music at you. We also know that not everyone who comes to this site has the time to be as involved with or informed about the local scene as maybe they’d like to be. So for those casual readers who either can’t or have no interest in keeping up with the parade of artists we try to cover, who may not know the difference between Bitter and Biters, we have created our TRIPLE THREAT feature. The premise is simple: Our writers will put their heads together and come up with three tracks that grabbed our attention over the past week. Then we tell you why the songs are great and worth listening to. That’s it. Maybe some weeks we’ll have a guest commentator come in and share their favorites, but the format will always remain the same: three songs, some words, and we out. Enjoy.

Warm Red – “S.A.M.”

From the “Big Tiger” b/w “S.A.M.” 7″

The deliberate chaos of Warm Red’s new 7″ feels like vindication for Immersive giving the band a spot on our artists to watch list before they had released any music. Their February debut tape on State Laughter was nothing if not dense and intimidating, but “S.A.M” is a viscerally sharp statement of the band’s evolving cohesion. Tony Negroni’s vocals slither around the band’s punishing syncopation while never relinquishing control of the grimy track. Whether the song’s stringent atmosphere leaves any breathing room for dancing depends on how deeply the listener succumbs to the paranoia of Warm Red, but punk club misanthropes craving the comfortable fog of darkness will find plenty of it in Warm Red’s reptilian world. – Russell Rockwell

Danger Incorporated – “Wassup Phonies”

From the standalone single

There’s nothing particularly inventive or bold about “Wassup Phonies,” the new single from Danger Incorporated. Sure, the acoustic guitar that filters throughout the track is a nice touch, but elsewhere the track follows the duo’s familiar formula of pairing anthemic hooks with atmospheric trap production. No matter though, as Louis Dufflebags and Boothlord have consistently proven themselves to be master of massaging that formula into irresistible bangers. “Wassup Phonies” may not be pair’s most dynamic cut or their most forward-looking, but it’s fabulously woozy and infectious nonetheless. Even when they’re delivering the expected, Danger Inc. manage to sound fresh and inspired. – Avery Shepherd

Quiet Hounds – “Antioch”

From the forthcoming LP, Everything Else is Noise

As Atlanta rockers Quiet Hounds prepare for the release of their sixth record, Everything Else is Noise, the band have shared the possibility that the album will be a more pop-leaning effort fueled by more introspective lyrics and themes. And listening to lead single “Antioch,” you can certainly see the group traveling down a more contemplative path. But sonically, the music remains very inspired by varying shades of rock and folk as the song shifts from meditative reverie to rousing, full-blown jam. Overall it’s a gripping effort, but how much the track reflects the aesthetic framework of the upcoming record remains to be seen. – Guillermo Castro

Everything Else is Noise is out Oct. 11.
