Look, we know we throw a lot of new music at you. We also know that not everyone who comes to this site has the time to be as involved with or informed about the local scene as maybe they’d like to be. So for those casual readers who either can’t or have no interest in keeping up with the parade of artists we try to cover, who may not know the difference between Bitter and Biters, we have created our TRIPLE THREAT feature. The premise is simple: every Friday our writers will put their heads together and come up with three tracks that grabbed our attention over that week. Then we tell you why the songs are great and worth listening to. That’s it. Maybe some weeks we’ll have a guest commentator come in and share their favorites, but the format will always remain the same: three songs, some words, and we out. Enjoy.

Day Old Man

Day Old Man – “Museum Lecture”

From the stanadalone single

It’s been nearly two years since Day Old Man released any music, but their new single “Museum Lecture” easily makes up for lost time with sludgy riffs and ecstatic jams. As usual, the duo deliver one of the heaviest tracks to come out of Atlanta this year without losing their penchant for the weird and esoteric. The track, which is definitely not a two-minute sound bite about textiles and art, extends the reign of Day Old Man for another day. – Russell Rockwell

AGYN

AGYN – “4th of July”

From the stanadalone single

Verily, anyone who trades in the dark arts knows that fear stems from the unknown. Cut to the horror-stricken face when the creature appears; spare the details about the aberration in the corner that may have once been your neighbor. The slick techno synths of AGYN’s “4th of July” don’t seem malignant at first, but when Lee Heikkila crawls in at a dirge-like pace, with the cryptic insistence that “I want something or only nothing at all,” you know something can’t be natural here. Admittedly, this single is several degrees more neon-tinted than most of their last tape, where Heikkila would wail Siouxsie-like over serpentine drum and bass creations, but their inscrutable monotone here rattles yr nerves just as much. Add to this the classic EBM glitch-out in the middle, and you’ve got a very clever menace on your hands, the kind that you might not ever see until it’s too late. – Lee Adcock

AGYN will perform on Sunday, October 22 at Casa Nova alongside Ada Babar, Peter Webb, Akátá, and Sherrill 3. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Donations encouraged. All Ages.

ContraBAND TheVIBEsetter

ContraBAND TheVIBEsetter – “Pressure” (feat. Lule)

From the stanadalone single

Omar Chery, better known as ContraBAND TheVIBEsetter, moved to Atlanta from Miami just before his teenage years. In this melting pot of a city, Chery emerged with an eclectic palette ranging from gospel to EDM, shuffling through the roles of DJ, producer, and A&R like a deck of cards. His latest track, the bouncy, dancehall “Pressure,” shines a light on guest vocalist Lule. More than anything, Chery says the single is “the result of two people resolving issues and letting bygones be bygones.” As for his moniker? “It’s actually a funny story,” he says. “I went to military school at one point in time. In flee period, we weren’t allowed to do anything. It was like hazing. Honey Buns, things of that nature, weren’t allowed. I had access to Costco. I was going to take those things and sell them. That’s what was called contraband.” – Mus Abubaker
