It’s been well over two years since we’ve heard from Soft Continent and if their new single, “Come On In” proves anything, it’s that the group’s core trio of Clayton Taylor (guitar, keys, vocals), Jason Kingsland (guitars, keys), and Jess Jones (vocals) have not lost their knack for crafting irrepressibly catchy twang pop. If anything, the band has grown even more delightfully infectious, expanding their alt-country palette to include a heavier dose of sunny ’60s pop and scattered shards of blistering psychedelic rock.

For the band’s upcoming set of new songs, they recruited Zach Pyles (synth) and Patrick Anderson (drums) of local synthpop innovators Culture Culture to help flesh out the tracks with more adventurous synth sounds, drums, and auxiliary percussion. In addition, Pyles took over co-production and engineering duties, which ultimately helped to place the band on a more experimental trajectory. The result — at least on first single “Come On In” — is a far busier and more layered sound that pulses with possibilities. On the surface, it might appear as just another driving indie pop single (albeit a very good one), but throw on a pair of headphones and it’s astonishing all the details that jump out at you. Soft Continent have always had an ear for writing melodies that sound like they’ve existed forever, but never has their songwriting been this expansive or inventive. It’s a jaw-dropping effort, to put it plainly, and I can’t wait to hear more. Listen below.
