In the past, singer-songwriter Sara Rachele has been able to wring considerable success from her expressive voice and stark, intimate songwriting. Teaming up with the Skintights, however, has allowed her to expand upon her mostly country and folk palette and explore different sonic terrains, especially those of classic ’60s pop and ramshackle indie rock. The trio’s debut LP, Motel Fire, featured a wide mix of sounds, helping expose the burgeoning artist to a bigger audience.

Despite her recent moves, however, Rachele’s latest single—an unreleased outtake from the Motel Fire sessions—is a return to the sparse, confessional stylings we’ve come to know and appreciate. “Free from Love” opens with a delicate fingerpicked electric guitar echoing beneath her haunting vocals. Along the way we’re introduced to a few other elements—a wistful harmonica here, the soft shuffle of drums there—but mostly this is Rachele’s show, much as it’s always been. The end result is a track that’s elegiac and gorgeously unadorned reminding us once again that she’s a force to be reckoned with—with or without accompaniment.
