Since 1993, Duluth, Minnesota’s Low have been chilling our bones with their spectral slowcore. Combining melancholy atmospherics with a kind of restless minimalism, the wintery tension of their music thrives on exploring the space between the harrowing austerity and stark beauty of their glacial dirges. The trio’s fifth studio album, Ones and Sixes, arrived last September and it finds the band sounding livelier and more dynamic than it has in a decade. Expect an evening of hushed intimacy and quiet desolation, and for god’s sake don’t be the jackass that spends the night talking over the band.

If you’re looking to support some local music, you’re in luck — this week’s calendar comes stacked with several record release shows including MammaBear at Star Bar, Powerkompany at Live Wire Athens, and more. But if we had to recommend just one show to make it out to this week, it would be Waking Astronomer at the Earl. The experimental trio’s self-titled debut meshes R&B futurism with ambient hip-hop beats and hints of jazz, creating a sound that is both infectious and forward-thinking. Featuring an impressive group of similarly-minded supporting acts, this promises to be an evening filled with good vibes and adventurous sounds.
