Anyone who feared Whores. might temper their aggression or adopt a more streamlined aesthetic after signing with indie heavyweight eOne Music can breathe easy now. The Atlanta noise rock destroyers dropped the first track from their upcoming LP, GOLD., and it’s just as caustic and menacing as anything they’ve released in the past. Still, “Playing Poor” isn’t some updated rehash of the corrosive sludge punk the trio has traded in since release their debut EP, Ruiner, in 2011. On the contrary, the pacing is considerably faster, the riffs more frenzied and chaotic, the vocals more abrasive. In short, Whores. are ratcheting up the belligerence in every way imaginable, and damn it feels good.

In an interview with Immersive Atlanta last October, frontman Christian Lembach described some of their new material as “…pretty fast with a more early Ceremony/Obliterations vibe.” I don’t know about you, but I’d say that nails this scorched earth bruiser right on the head. GOLD. was recorded at Atlanta’s Parhelion Studios with producer Ryan Boesch (Helmet, Melvins, Fu Manchu), who worked with the band on their last EP, 2013’s Clean, and has spent his career coaxing the highest levels of acerbic aggression out of some of the industry’s heaviest acts. If “Playing Poor” is any indication, GOLD. might be Whores.’ meanest record yet.

Listen below.
