You only get one opportunity to make a first impression. There’s no slate to wipe clean, no brand to maintain or image to uphold, so you may as well reach for the gold. Take newcomers the Callous Daoboys, for instance. They ain’t playing. One single into their career and they are already casting sci-fi allusions, embracing animal magnetism, and unleashing enough abrasive weirdo noise punk fervor to make you queasy with tension and delight.

Featuring members of Sunnycide and Bug Bite, the Atlanta sextet is comprised of Maddie Caffrey (guitar), Claire Darling (bass), Alex Jeral (drums), Adam Collins (gutters), Amber Christman (violin), and Carson Pace (vocals). Over the last year or so they’ve been popping up on bills at house shows, DIY venues, and the occasional club, gaining fans and building momentum with every fiery performance. The band recently wrapped up recording their debut EP, My Dixie Wrecked, with Randy Garcia at Fort Karate, which, according to their Bandcamp page, is out Apr. 1. The group also has a 4-way split out Mar. 1 with further details TBA.

In the meantime, however, enjoy this first offering because it’s rad and deserves your attention. Directed by Ally Prusnofsky, the video for “She Thinks My Tractor Beam is Sexy” isn’t much more than a compilation of grainy, lo-fi live clips, but somehow it feels perfect. It’s raw and wild, and the band’s feverish intensity comes through on every frame. The Callous Daoboys are certainly a band to keep an eye on, because as introductions go, this is a damn good one.

The Callous Daoboys will perform tonight at The Thing at RowdyDowdy. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $5. All ages.
