We generally judge music videos on factors such as style, pacing, narrative, and cinematography, but equally important is the video’s appropriateness towards its subject; that is, whether or not it fits with the spirit of the song. “Bianca Vasquez (Trash Hump Island Adventure)” has long been a live staple for experimental rock trio CHEW, and why not? The song is the perfect encapsulation of the band’s ability to write adventurous music that is catchy and exhilarating. So it’s entirely fitting that the group’s new video would be something equally batty yet captivating.
Created by Richie Brown, the same artist who put together the cover artwork for the group’s 3D EP, “Bianca Vasquez” is a fast-paced and colorful blast of psychedelic imagery that’s essentially split into two segments. While both parts feature a figure animated with pulsing lines, shapes, and colors, the track’s more fluid and melodic sections are accompanied by natural scenes such as lush green fields and tranquil waters. Within the song’s noisy breakdowns, however, chaos reigns with a barrage of swirling geometric patterns, restless shifting hues and pigments, and mind-bending hallucinogenic imagery that all but achieves sensory overload. Overall, it’s quirky, trippy, and fun, providing the perfect atmosphere for a band that’s grown adept at working within the outer peripheries or rock, punk, and noise. Watch it above.
