If you’re searching for some method to Mission Trips’ madness, don’t bother. The experimental label founded by Chris White, aka Magicicada, operates largely in its own time and manner, which much of the time appears to be on the fly. With that said, brood0 is a new solo venture from White and the latest addition to the label’s eclectic roster. The only additional information available is that brood0 is “the rhythmic relative of Magicicada,” which makes further sense the longer you listen to his debut single, “Negative End Vortex.”

brood0 swims in the same abstract and mercurial electronic waters as Magicicada, but unlike that project’s myriad left turns and willful obfuscation, White populates these oceans with tiny rhythmic buoys and small percussive jetties that help lead the listener along a more (relatively) direct path. It’s still a wild and unpredictable ride; the difference here is that you’re always in sight of the shore.

As for the video, which we’re excited to premiere for you today, it operates in much the same way. Created by White, the visuals are a psychedelic joyride through the subconscious. There are a plethora of mind-bending patterns, fantastical swirls of color, and trippy flashes of light and darkness, but every so often you’ll catch a glimpse of something in the background — a parade of distorted faces, the distinct congregating of tissue cells — that keeps the viewer grounded on this mortal plane. White’s music and art has always been challenging and cerebral, and “Negative End Vortex” is worthy addition to his catalog.

Details are still scant, but word from Mission Trips is that brood0’s debut record will be out in May, so stay tuned.
