With their eclectic blend of hip-hop, funk, rock, and experimental sounds, Grand Prize Winners From Last Year have long been at the forefront of the Atlanta scene. The group’s crossover appeal has allowed them to play to various audiences in a wide variety of environments, which has only emboldened the group to increasingly expand their musical boundaries. But while the group continues to work on their third album recorded at Stankonia with the support of Converse Rubber Tracks, GPWFLY frontman Believe has already dropped a pair of singles in support of his upcoming LP, Audio Vimana. Although the tracks retain the adventurous spirit that has come to define his group’s work, there’s a singularity to the songwriting that shows the artist coming into his own.

Inspired by the post-punk and new wave he grew up to listening on the radio, “Miracle” finds Believe utilizing a retro dance groove to explore a kind of dark and mysterious R&B aesthetic. Overall, the track is compact and catchy, but while the vibe may feel contemporary and fresh, the sound remains largely tethered to the past. “My current mood is definitely ’86,” he explains. “I set out to make a project that sounds like it should’ve come out in that decade… The lyrics are very personal. It’s about an artist finding his muse, the moment you meet someone who changes your life forever or completely transforms your worldview.”

Shot in collaboration with visual artist Kris Pilcher at Downtown Player’s Club on South Broad Street, the video layers strobing images, illustrations, and geometric figures to create an enveloping atmosphere that mirrors the song’s contemplative allure. “I wanted the video to have a retro look (à la Max Headroom) as well as an introspective feel to match the song,” says Believe. “It was very cool collaborating with my friend and amazing visual artist Kris Pilcher. His ideas took my concept for the video to the next level.”
