Whatever you might think of BABY BABY, you have to admire their perseverance. For eight years, the band has peddled their rambunctious brand of high-energy party rock to a wide spectrum of audiences, and have managed to survive and thrive while so many of their peers have disbanded and faded into memory. Along the way, they’ve earned the support of organizations like AFROPUNK, Warped Tour, and Red Bull Sound Select, each of which has served as both a legitimizing force and a means of broadening the band’s appeal.

The group’s latest LP, playfully titled Semifamous, is coming out later this month and it promises to be their best, most cohesive set of songs yet. As always, the individual tracks document the band’s assorted hijinks and shenanigans amidst an onslaught of catchy punked-up grooves and roaring riffs. They’re meant to be fun, of course, but not so deliriously silly that you can’t find some deeper meaning underlying them.

Recently, BABY BABY unveiled the video for album single “Krew Love Pt II” on their Facebook wall. Shot by Gaslight Picturehouse, the video pays homage to the long-running sitcom That ‘70s Show, including a parody of the famed opening credits set to a reworked version of Big Star’s “In the Street.” The clip is irreverent and intentionally goofy with plenty of weed, alcohol, basement partying, and cream pies to the face. In other words, it’s much of the same youthful abandonment the group has always excelled at depicting.

But when it came to time to discuss the video for the ecstatic mid-tempo rocker “Jeez,” the band made an interesting decision: they chose to re-use the same footage. Why so? Allow frontman Fontez Brooks to explain:

“Partying is an art. And like art, its complexities encompass all aspects of life. Every soirée needs a soundtrack and that’s what we’ve provided. ‘Krew Love’ and ‘Jeez’ are the yin and yang to the party. ‘Krew Love’ is that perfect moment when life is good. When you’re partying with the people you love and you’re like 92% sure you’re going to get laid tonight, while ‘Jeez’ is 3 hours after that when you’re throwing chairs screaming ‘IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT?! HUH?! YOU WANTED CRAZY GUY?! WELL HERE HE IS!!!!’ In other words ‘Krew Love’ is Happy Drunk and ‘Jeez’ is sad drunk. When sad drunk takes control there’s that moment where you should just give up and go home, but what if you don’t? You’re agitated, sad, and so wasted; your emotions come pouring out of you in the most extreme way. Imagine having an outer body experience as you ruin your life and yet you can’t stop yourself. So when it came time to brainstorm video ideas for ‘Jeez’ we realized we already shot the video. Parties are awesome because getting drunk acts as a veil, hiding your deepest insecurities. Until the veil hardens creating a self-inflicted tomb. Then you’re just the drunk guy at the party laughing and crying at the same time. Decorating your deathbed.”

You can watch the video for “Jeez” above and its counterpart, “Krew Love Pt II,” below.

Semifamous is out digitally Sept. 16. Pre-orders are available here.
