Featuring members from former local greats Sorry No Ferrari (guitarist Chad Shivers), Blame Game and Knaves Grave (guitarist George Asimakos), as well as Atlanta scene mainstays Book of Colors (bassist Eric Balint) and Jeffrey Bützer and the Bicycle Eaters (Balint and Shivers), Moonbase are at a loss for neither talent nor pedigree. So it’s a bit surprising — and more than a little disappointing — that the progressive surf rock outfit haven’t received greater notoriety for their excellent debut album, Creation Myths.

Released in September of last year, the record has since flown on the radar, partially due to the band’s somewhat limited performance schedule. Still, the group is continuing to promote the LP, and last week they unveiled their first video for the standout track “The Serpent.”

Created by Shivers’ ex-Sorry No Ferrari bandmate Drew Mobley of Banvard Films, the hand-crafted animation is one of the more unique music videos to be released this year. With Moonbase’s agile, shape-shifting instrumental providing the soundtrack, the video follows three harpoon-wielding sailors as they hunt down a deadly serpent through dark waters. After coming across a shipwreck and a mangled corpse floating in the water, our heroes finally encounter their prey and a bloody, Jaws-like battle ensues, claiming the lives of two of the men. The video ends in apparent triumph, with the serpent slain and our remaining protagonist sailing towards a mysterious shape-faced island that rises out of the ocean. Apparently a second part is due out sometime in the future, so if you want to find out what happens next, you’ll have to be patient and wait.
