Atlanta trio Goldyard have been infecting ears with their alt-rap approach for nearly half a decade. Yesterday, the group unveiled a new video for their single “Briknik,” taken off last year’s Fuck Culture 2 LP.

“Briknik” is business as usual as far as content and production is concerned. Mixing trap with acid-laced synths, the keys skip about playfully while the bass keeps heads nodding. The sing-rap style is an ode to Drake, but minus the bipolar-esque inconsistency we’ve grown used to with the Toronto legend. Instead, Goldyard embrace the finiteness of life, the rap game and the party lifestyle with a sense of reflectiveness. Lines like “I wonder if I’ll burn the fire / or go to heaven, singing with the choir / of angels / and when I decompose, I might just grow into a butterfly / [it] plagues my mind / keeps me up / cus I know karma is coming bruh,” resonate with a contemplative and mature tone that is rarely seen in a lot of today’s newcomers.

Directed by Renn Brown and Nathan Bob Jones, the visuals take us to the head space of A.T. and In-Doe, where everything is laced in gold and what I presume is a constant flow of champagne. The barrage of money, gold, and guns is a bit contradictory to the lyrical content, but the random pauses, visual effects, and overall tone keeps things interesting until the last frame.
