It’s been nothing less than a banner year for ABRA, but if her latest video proves anything, it’s that the future is wide open for the Darkwave Duchess. Working with director JMP, the Awful Records standout showcases the mercurial mix of effortless cool and seductive charm that seems to resonate in everything she touches.

Filmed in a Miami hi-rise, the video’s posh, urban locale accentuates her aura of towering ambition while helping to underscore the track’s luxuriant R&B gleam. It’s not so much a show of confidence as it is an acknowledgment of her ascent, both in its current, burgeoning form and the impending wave of hype that seems likely to surface soon. “Are you really going to stand there staring at me from across the room?” she croons over sparse piano chords and sharp bass stabs, her words more of a provocative dare than an incredulous inquiry. Throughout the clip, JMP’s understated camerawork is intent on drawing out and amplifying ABRA’s quiet intensity, resulting in yet another declarative statement from one of Atlanta’s most promising newcomers.

“Fruit” is taken from ABRA’s latest EP, Rose, available for download or stream via Bandcamp.

ABRA will perform tomorrow night at MJQ Concourse as part of Awful Royale: Awful Records showcase. Also performing will be Father, Slug Christ, and KeithCharles Spacebar. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $20.
