After releasing 2014’s Suck My Shirt, the Coathangers spent most of their time on the road, touring everywhere from Europe to Australia. Though their upcoming album still doesn’t have a release date, the Coathangers quench our desire for jagged garage punk in the form of an upcoming split single with the Black Lips. Despite running in similar circles, the two bands rarely play together, and this will be the first time they have teamed up for a release.

The Coathangers’ contribution to the split, “Watch Your Back,” is three minutes of scorching punk delivered with a shout and a sneer. The trio rides out the song with a tenuous grasp as Stephanie Luke’s drums cut mercilessly through the mix. There is no balance here, no outdated whisper-to-scream moments of repose, only an incessant wildfire of gang vocals, which challenge the listener to try and keep up.

Suck My Shirt was a relaxed moment for the band. Raucousness was tempered with a jaunty swagger. “Watch Your Back” is the Coathanger’s at their most chaotic, viewing the world through sonic tunnel vision, blind to everything but incendiary rock and roll. Listen below.

The “Freedom Fries” b/w “Watch Your Back” split 7″ will be released by Suicide Squeeze Records on November 13. Pre-orders are available here.

The Coathangers will perform on Tuesday, November 3 at Star Bar. Supporting them will be the Birth Defects and Paralyzer. Doors open at 9 p.m. $10 gets you in.
