The latest track by instrumental sludge rockers Spore Lord is a whirlwind of dirt and grime, splattering everything it touches with layer on layer of psychedelic riffs.

The trio have been shredding since 2012, but “I” is only their second official single after “III,” released last year. It’s easy to see the influence of other sludge giants bubbling beneath the song, but Spore Lord eschew the intricate layers common in Southern sludge, instead proffering a formidable wall of fury which recalls bands like Black Tusk or Torche.

“I” lasts only two minutes, yet Spore Lord are able to fit in a surprising number of rhythmic shifts, albeit half-buried under the chaos. By the time the groove really sets in, the song is brought to an unceremonious end. The result is both captivating and frustrating, a quick hit from a band which seems poised to do more.

Spore Lord will perform on Saturday, February 13 at Sweetwater Bar & Grill when the play in support of Zrůda.
Canopy and All My Vices at Once open the show. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 for 21+ and $10 for 18-20.
