Featuring Evan Leima of Dream Culture, Will Ingram and Rob Smith from Wieuca, and Brent Bolde, formerly of Big Morgan, Athens newcomers Zebulon Pyke are as much an experiment as they are a side project. Each of the band’s songs are carved out of ten minute blocks of freeform improvisation, without much thought given to structure or organization. Essentially the group gets together, embarks on a nebulous psyche rock excursion, and selects the best, most cohesive chunk to tweak and mix down in the studio. The focus is on instinct and spontaneity, and seeking out those magic moments when the band coalesces into something unique and inspired.

With their debut track “Spiritual Balding,” Zebulon Pyke abandon any attempt at utilizing melodies or hooks to propel the song forward. There are some fuzzed-out riffs and an occasional blues rock groove, but mostly it’s a scattershot mix of brain-melting psych rock explorations, masturbatory guitar noodle eruptions, and blown-out vocals teetering on the edge of insanity. It’s not for everyone, but that’s sort of the point. Music this self-indulgent needs to have an element of amusement or off-the-wall absurdity; fortunately “Spiritual Balding” has a little bit of both. Listen below.
