With the holidays just around the corner, emotive rock trio worlds greatest dad have partnered with Chattanooga’s Formative Years on a new split EP. The six-song release comes out today and features two original tracks from each group along with a holiday-themed cover, perfect for all your pagan punk festivities. This morning we’re excited to be able to premiere one of the band’s new cuts — the tense, propulsive “Peace of Mind.” It’s the first taste of new music we’ve heard since the group’s 2015 EP, Boredom Blues, and it finds them treading the same moody waters, albeit with more confidence and clarity of vision.

More than most new bands, worlds greatest dad seem to have an intrinsic appreciation for the power of space, an understanding that the silence implied in a single lingering note can be more effective than yet another bruising power chord. Even when they’re locked into a particularly taut groove such as on the song’s soaring chorus, they never overplay or allow the moment to get away from them. In the meantime, Maddie Duncan’s vocals walk the fine line between emotional awareness and vulnerability; she’s perceptive enough to see the root causes of her fracturing relationship, but that doesn’t mean that shit don’t hurt. (“I didn’t need any saving / I was doing just fine,” she sings defiantly as the song builds to a stormy climax.) Overall, it’s another sturdy and compact offering from the three-piece, but more importantly it’s a startlingly urgent one, proving that worlds greatest dad are a band to keep an eye on in the new year and beyond.
