There’s an old adage about familiarity breeding contempt, and while that may hold true for artists that borrow too much from their influences without giving anything back, there’s something to be said for the comfort of the well known and respect for good craftsmanship. In the case of Charleston, SC songwriter Tyler Boone and his new single “Moving On,” there’s little in the way of pure innovation, but his gift for crafting rock-solid songs filled with contagious hooks is plainly evident. It’s an earnest rocker with big verses and a surging chorus, and although the track moves mostly in the ways you would expect, its elastic energy and Boone’s pop charm manage to win the day.

Thinking about it now, it makes sense that I would be introduced to Boone’s work through Drew Beskin, a songwriter with his own penchant for simple yet engaging songs. When Beskin approached me about premiering this single, I thought about turning it down, mostly because of this site’s near exclusive focus on local music. But after a few spins, I caved. There’s just something ineffable about “Moving On.” Maybe it’s Boone’s sturdy presence, or the song’s jaunty rhythms, or the tight harmonies from guest duo Finnegan Bell. Whatever it is, it breeds anticipation and a degree of patience. Yes, you can feel that chorus coming from a mile away, but you still long for it to arrive. Familiarity has its time and place; fortunately, Tyler Boone understands when and how to get there.
