There’s a fine distinction between the kind of polished songwriting that makes a track bounce and skip across your speakers and the sort that results in plodding commercialism, and the Georgia Flood continue to prove they have the right instincts to walk on the right side of that line. Coming on the heels of their debut EP, People Like Ourselves, and a nation-wide tour supporting rising Los Angeles rockers Dorothy, “Take a Hit” finds the band once again blending emphatic blues rock with funky pop rhythms and slick hooks. On the surface it may seem like a well-worn, radio-ready aesthetic, but even under tight scrutiny, the group’s punchy grooves and knack for big choruses measure up. With youthful exuberance on their side, the band has plenty of fuel to stoke their fire, but it’s their maturity and vision as songwriters that keep listeners coming back for more.
