I don’t know what my favorite part of “Firedrill” is—the feverish intensity of the trio’s geometric assault of the gloriously shrill absurdity of the vocals. But while Fuiste’s penchant for merging madcap song structures with a dizzying technical prowess forms a large part of their appeal, I’m equally impressed by their ability to make their music palatable—damn near tuneful at times—for the more casual listener. In the case of their latest single, the track’s near-constant evolutions are certainly something to marvel at. Jazz, funk, and prog passages are strung together in interesting and dynamic ways, and while changes seem to arrive by the instant, the group’s playing is never messy or slapdash. The vocals by turn are a bit more difficult to digest, in the sense that there’s no discernible attempt at a hook or melody, but I don’t think it matters. The bizarro scatting and offbeat phrasing only seem to add to the song’s adventurous backdrop, forming one more eccentric layer to unravel. Listen below.
“Firedrill” was released in advance of Fuiste’s upcoming week-long tour which kicks off tomorrow at 529. The band is currently writing and recording an LP set for release in spring of 2017. Check out the full list of dates below.
