There is no shortage of emo bands in Atlanta these days, but few exhibit the same honesty and clarity of vision as Fox Wound. The local four-piece play with the dynamism and purgative intensity that the genre demands, while managing to avoid the paint-by-numbers stylings and personal diary cliches that have led to an army of skeptics.

On August 2, the band will release their new LP, In Passing, You Too Faded, and today we’re excited to being you the lead single, “Kathryn P.” It’s a stormy mid-tempo cut that alternates between airy, melodic verses and more dramatic passages rife with taut guitars and moody tension. Joseph McMichen has an ethereal quality to his voice, one that’s hypnotic and dreamy, but also coated in a light dusting of sandpaper grit. It’s clear he can aggressively belt it out and hit the high notes when needed, but here he remains fairly subdued. This is a highly personal song about death and loss, and McMichen is careful to allow the dark atmosphere to breathe.

The line between emotive songwriting and banal melodrama is often a fragile one, and on “Kathryn P.” Fox Wound prove they know how to step lightly without losing any necessary force.
