If you live in the modern world, then you’ve given away something about yourself. Welcome to the information era! The question now is, what happens to all that data that Google, Amazon, and Facebook continue to harvest? Until biotech can play our emotions like a fiddle, for now the info hoarders create AI and algorithms to predict what we need. And have they succeeded? Can Netflix preempt each of our personal quests for happiness and enlightenment with their select bank of movies? Can Facebook shepherd us into meaningful communities? Can Google read our minds?!

Given the many omnipresent corporations that gather clues about us every day, you might feel like any attempt to reclaim your privacy would be hopeless. But otherworldly traveler Delorean Gray (aka former Fake Flowers wunderkind Jacob Chisenhall) believes in us. Specifically, he and his trusty synthpop crew believe in the misunderstood nerds among us who hoard their own stashes of knowledge. “Otaku Punk,” the second single and title track from the group’s forthcoming LP, waves neon pom-poms to closeted anime geeks everywhere, celebrating private time with Devo-worthy spunk and Vocaloid precision: “And when you feel stuck / just bury your head and find yourself again / information is your friend.” The ridiculous optimism might seem a little silly in these dire times, but then silliness may be just what snaps us out of our servitude to the data giants.

Otaku Punk is out this February.

Delorean Gray will perform on Tue., Feb. 26 at 529 alongside Summer Heart and Brothertiger. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $10 in advance or $13 at the door. 21+ to enter.
