Despite its breezy funk rhythms, there is nothing laid-back or nonchalant about “Summer,” the new single from Bret Busch’s solo debut, Pills Lace & Confetti, out this Friday. The vibe may be leisurely, but the songwriting is rich and sumptuous, drawing upon a mix of disco, soft rock, and well-layered pop that harkens back to the high fidelity sounds of the ’70s and early ’80s. With 25-plus years spent in Atlanta music, singing for the likes of Parlour, Pardner, Ramada, and the Hollidays, Busch knows his away around any variety of tunes, and for his first LP, he’s assembled an ideal and illustrious crew (including members of Rock*A*Teens, Destroyer, and Janelle Monáe’s backing band) to help bind his diverse sounds together.
With “Summer,” Busch unfurls a swaggering, swanky ode to the season of sun and fun. The lush guitars, punchy horns, and infectious grooves glide effortlessly beneath the singer’s smooth croon, which never seeks to usurp the song’s sparkling atmosphere. It’s a track built for dancing — not so much amidst the nocturnal swoon of a darkened nightclub, but out in the sun, with your shades on and a chilled glass of Prosecco in hand.
