Bleach Garden don’t appear to be ones for subtlety. I mean, if you were going to start a tribute band to ‘90s grunge or the Seattle sound or some shit, you could do worse for a moniker. But as it is, the Atlanta trio are here churning out noisy, angst-ridden, full-throttle scuzz-punk like it’s ‘94 all over again. No bullshit, no lame stabs at irony, no pretense. Just crank it up and let ‘er rip.

So, yeah, maybe the first thing to day about the group’s new single “Parasite” is that it isn’t some second or third wave retread looking to inject some contemporary sensibility into the genre for the new millennium. Nah, this is a raw, rough-and-tumble trip into the way back machine—a long drink straight from the source, if you will—all festering fuzz guitars and spit-in-your-eye mettle. The touchstones may be obvious—Nirvana, Mudhoney, maybe a dash of Tad’s metal thrust—but that doesn’t stop Bleach Garden from tearing down the walls and tossing out a melodic hook or two along the way. “Parasite” is everything you want in a grunge song in 2019—it’s loud, abrasive, cathartic. After all, if you’re going to crib from the classics, you might as well stick to the proven formula.

“Parasite” is the lead single from Bleach Garden’s forthcoming sophomore full length, due out this summer.

Bleach Garden will perform tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar alongside The Stone Eye, Trainfight, and Ssurround Ssound. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $12. 18 + to enter.
