The melodic intricacies of Pop Weirdos have always been hidden in plain sight, but on their new single, “Theory Wars,” their knack for clever, sunny songwriting is more apparent than ever before. The straightforward tune is the definition of breezy, but it feels almost too easy for the duo, who are so skilled at polishing musical gems in the over-mined world of AM radio pop.

According to the band, “Theory Wars” is a send-up of college philosophers, the ever-contentious rhetoricians who too often insert themselves into any and all conversations. It’s an understated take on the topic, delivered by Bennett Kane and Jamison Murphy’s balanced harmonies. Like most of Pop Weirdos’ previous tracks, Kane was responsible for the recording and mixing, while Richard Sapeta contributed on drums.

In a time when gentler songs are often derided as twee, Pop Weirdos continue to be a breath of fresh air. The allusive songwriting, which offsets the occasional smarminess of their tunes, isn’t quite as astonishing on “Theory Wars” as on their previous release Alcudia. But as always Pop Weirdos prove that simple can be worthwhile.

“Theory Wars” is the first single from the band’s upcoming EP, Any Old Time. No specific release date has been set.

Pop Weirdos will perform on Tue., Aug. 9 at WonderRoot in support of Slackwater and Dakota Floyd. US NERO and Small Time ‘Capone open the show. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $5.
