The second annual Plasma Fest is taking place today at Chosewood Hall in southeast Atlanta, marking another year of eclectic local music and building community through art. Created by the local online platform, Plasma Magazine, the immersive festival was founded to further extend the publication’s mission of highlighting and promoting a defined cross-section of Atlanta’s alternative art and music cultures. As a means of pursuing that goal, this year’s event has brought together yet another far-flung lineup that touches on many facets of the local music scene, including hip-hop, R&B, rock, and folk.
Leading that lineup is five-piece folk band Loudermilk & Moon, who are celebrating the official unveiling of their latest EP and premiering a new music video at the event. They will be joined by singer-songwriter Sean Bryant, aka Big Brutus, fresh off the release of his third LP, America Circa, as well as Grand Prize Winners From Last Year, worlds greatest dad, LONER, The Queendom, The Prblms, and MonteQarlo.
In addition to live music, the festival will also play host to many local visual artists who will be displaying and selling their work at the event. Other attractions include food from many local eateries, including grilled cheese savants Brainfood, as well as the experimental sound collage podcast, Mystery Meat, who will have their hand-made, fully immersive sound tanks available for attendees to explore.
While this year’s fest is similar in size and scope to last year’s inaugural event, much of its evolution has occurred behind the scenes. According to Plasma Magazine founder and editor-in-chief Jordan Neal, the arts community has been more engaged and proactive, resulting in more efficient planning and further validation of their hard work.
“Plasma Fest has transitioned into a shining example of the power of community,” says Neal. “We started as a little publication whose first annual Plasma Fest was the origin of a whirlwind of great press as well as unbelievable acts of community engagement. We soon realized that what we do on a daily basis matters and can affect change in a very positive way. Planning year two of Plasma Fest has been wild. Last year, we scrambled to put everything together and managed to pull it off without a hitch. This year, all of the local talents came to us. Our primary focus this year was merely organizing, promoting, and executing the event.”
Plasma Fest goes down today at Chosewood Hall. Doors open at 5 p.m. Admission is $5. All Ages.
