Celebrating the ten-year anniversary of their sophomore album On Letting Go, post-hardcore stalwarts Circa Survive came prepared to deliver a memorable night at Atlanta’s historic Tabernacle theater. Virginia Beach rockers Turnover were the first to take the stage and set the mood with their catchy combination of indie rock and dreamy psychedelic pop, which made it easy for the crowd to move about and loosen up. They were followed by post-hardcore veterans mewithoutYou who kept the mood lively and energized by changing up the vibe a little with their fast pace and emotional style, provoking a multitude of crowd surfers and ratcheting up the overall intensity of the evening.
Led by eccentric frontman Anthony Green, Circa Survive finally took the stage. Green took a short moment to take in the atmosphere of tension and anticipation before leaping right into the first song, much to the delight of the audience who erupted in appreciation, perfectly echoing every word of the opening lyrics to “Living Together.” The band maintained that feverish energy for the remainder of the evening as they barreled through the entirety of On Letting Go. Green even managed to hype up the Atlanta crowd even more by changing into a Falcons shirt for the last couple of songs, noting how his friends and family back in Philly might not appreciate the gesture. By the time the group came out for their encore, a roaring rendition of the dynamic album closer “Your Friends Are Gone,” the crowd was in a frenzy. I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to join in on the fun so I made my way through the crowd to the center of the sweaty throng and sang along as Circa Survive brought the evening to an arresting conclusion.
