Three studio LPs into their impressive career, it’s no surprise that ambient sludge rock titans O’Brother have mastered the art of the slow burn. “Deconstruct” is the lead track and second single from the group’s upcoming album, Endless Light, and it arrives thick with tension and menace — all emphatic drums and turgid riffs. The spacey atmospherics the band is known more remain intact, but the song is more compact and tuneful than what we’ve grown accustomed to hearing from the group. Don’t worry, though. These guys still know how to bludgeon, only now Tanner Merritt’s caustic hooks linger longer in your head. It’s what we call a win-win.

As for the video, it appears to have been created in service of getting the audio out into the world. Whether or not that means we’ll see an official video sometime in the future remains to be seen, but speaking for myself, I’m a fan of the grainy black and white studio footage. It puts the emphasis where it belongs — on the music — and O’Brother have rarely sounded better. Check it out below.

Endless Light is out March 25 Triple Crown Records/Favorite Gentlemen. Pre-orders are available here.
