With a title like “Gravity Bong,” one would expect Meth Wax’s new single to be some kind of spaced-out trip through the stratosphere. Instead, it’s a non-stop rocket to garage punk bliss. Crunchy guitars compete with Daniel Tanghal’s shouted vocals before the Titus Andronicus inspired guitar solo blends everything into sugary chaos.

Over the past two years, the young band has accumulated a dedicated following through a rigorous local show schedule. In that time, they have expanded from Tanghal’s pet project to a bona fide cast of scruffy rock and rollers. “Gravity Bong” is the first sample of Meth Wax’s studio-sharpened edge, a precursor to the first professionally recorded album for the band. For the upcoming LP, Meth Wax worked with Drew Kirby (Mothers) and turned to Jesse Mangum at the Glow Recording Studio for mastering.

Though “Gravity Bong” still retains the personalized feel of Tanghal’s earlier recordings, the full band brings a ferocious identity which was missing on last year’s Full Frontal EP version of the song. This new version is more mature, and, yet, wilder than the demo, and the result is the hardest-hitting (no pun intended) Meth Wax track yet. Check it out below.

Meth Wax’s self-titled LP is out March 11.

You can catch Meth Wax at Krustfest on Friday, April 8 at WonderRoot. Also scheduled to perform are Sea Ghost, Flower, Blurry, Larry League, Kudzu Kids and more. Doors open at 7 p.m. $5 gets you in.
