Every time I think we’re going to get an opportunity to rest up and catch our breath, along comes yet another festival or event to shake us out of our stupor and remind us that we’re in the midst of some kind of golden age for Atlanta live music. This week’s culprits arrive courtesy of cultural torchbearers AFROPUNK and the Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs, whose free public art festival, ELEVATE: Microcosm, takes place downtown from October 13-21. In a way, it’s a shame that two events geared towards highlighting diversity and giving voice to the marginalized and disenfranchised are competing over the same weekend, but it’s hard to complain when there is this much great music happening.
Taking place on October 14-16 at 787 Windsor, AFROPUNK’s Carnival of Consciousness is promoting itself as “a new type of open cultural space and gathering of like-minded people” and will feature performances from big hitters such as Tyler, the Creator; SZA; Earl Sweatshirt; Saul Williams; and Big Freedia, as well as a solid influx of locals including Divine Interface, ABRA, DJ Sofa King Evil, Baby Baby, and more. Meanwhile, ELEVATE’s programming features a wide range of curated musical events including ATL Ladiesnite 2k16, SWEET TEA: A Queer Variety Show, Abdu Ali and Joy Postell’s Black Light Tour, JORTSFEST’s auditory tour of the city, and a Friday night block party headlined by ethereal R&B chanteuse BOSCO.
