The definition of “simulacra” is pretty straightforward: an image or representation of someone or something. And truth be told, I’m tempted to ascribe a similar description to Harvey Waters’ immersive take on techno and house music. The Atlanta producer is preparing to release his debut EP tomorrow, and if the lead single and title track are any indication, we can expect a groove-heavy record bustling with warm tones and vintage sounds. “Simulacra” has all the markers of a traditional house jam—the hypnotic repetition, the four-to-the-floor pulse of the backbeat, the synthesized bassline—but there’s something so elegantly lush about the song’s layering and composition that lifts it above the often minimalistic confines of the genre. Sure, there’s more than enough bouncy verve here to get the dance floor moving, but I’m just as happy to slap on a pair of headphones and drift off into the ether.

Simulacra is out tomorrow via VLSC Records. Pre-orders are available here.

Harvey Waters will celebrate the release of Simulacra tomorrow night, Jan. 11, at the Deep End alongside Baby Spider, Charolastra, and Dee Belvedere. Doors open at 10 p.m. Admission is FREE.
