With the release of his latest LP, I’m a Piece of Shit, looming on the near horizon, it makes sense that Awful Records mastermind Father would want to make some buzz and unleash his biggest guns on his latest single. “Why Don’t U” features potential Awful superstar ABRA handling the hook, as well as a guest verse from frequent collaborator iLoveMakonnen, who, along with Key!, first helped launch Father’s career by appearing on his 2014 smash “Wrist.”
Since that time, Father has achieved considerable success, both for himself and for his crew of audio misfits. A large part of his appeal stems from his ability to buck trends and deliver outlandish songs and videos that connect to an outsider mentality while still being palatable for general trap and hip-hop audiences. Which is part of what makes “Why Don’t U” so interesting. As a track, it’s more concerned with getting you to nod and vibe out than it is in upping his cred as a genuine eccentric. Yeah, the always ethereal ABRA repeating “Why don’t you love me daddy?” like some sort of twisted, sexed-up mantra might raise some eyebrows, but when the beat drops everything shifts, and the track becomes purely visceral. That’s not to say that iLoveMakonnen or Father’s verses are afterthoughts to his production; rather, all the pieces work in conjunction, resulting in a streamlined banger that plays as well in the clubs as it does in your bedroom. If Father is capable of creating a crossover hit, it would probably sound a whole lot like this. Listen below.
