Man Up, Yancey - Blue Fuzz

One of the most prominent and politically progressive bands of Atlanta’s DIY music scene, Man Up, Yancey is preparing to release their debut EP, Blue Fuzz, in conjunction with local promotions company, Sorry, Mom Productions.

For those not already familiar, the indie rockers are led by Yancey Ballard, a Covington, Georgia born songwriter that has a very astute and discerning way of thinking about the many political complications of today. Recently, the Atlanta music community has begun to open its doors to artists that stand behind LGBTQ rights, and Man Up, Yancey is fighting to sure that stays the case.

Blue Fuzz faces a lot of modern-day obstacles head-on. Much of the record is centered around the problems that arise from regrets and insecurity, whether it’s with friends or tied to romantic situations. Lead track “Opinion” opens with a quick strumming riff before peeling into a fierce missive about a toxic relationship. “If you don’t want my opinion, why do you, do you keep asking for it?” Ballard laments over tightly wound guitars, the vocals trapped somewhere between a sigh and a sneer.

The record continues en route with a pair of intensely dark sounding tracks in “Bestfriend” and “Limestone.” The former is especially striking with its slightly gothic stylings and dense post-punk that carries shades of Concrete Blonde’s nocturnal alternative rock. Meanwhile, EP closer “Oversensitive” pins Ballard’s quavering voice front and center. It’s a stormy mid-tempo rocker that blends the group’s rich, moody tapestries with a world-weary romanticism that lulls you into a trance until Ballard’s emotional cry near the end breaks the spell. It’s a stunning moment, and a beautiful end to this short and intoxicating EP.

Man Up, Yancey will celebrate the release of Blue Fuzz tomorrow, May 14 when they play as part of Flaky Niece 2 at the Drunken Unicorn alongside Slang, Sea Ghost, Yani Mo, Femignome, and Mad Ace. Doors open at 8 p.m. Donations of $5-10 are strongly encouraged.
