For all intents and purposes, Dream Culture is the brainchild of Athens-based songwriter Evan Leima who, with the exception of the late EP track “If,” wrote and performed the entirety of the band’s newest release, Post Habitual, himself. Generally, that sort of thing is an impressive side note, a press release blurb to parse through before moving on to the meat of the matter. But listen to just a fraction of lead track “Doesn’t Have to Be” and you’ll realize just how impressive an undertaking this is. This isn’t straightforward pop or by-the-numbers-rock he’s churning out here; the song is a complex and multi-layered piece of prog-infused psychedelic rock that touches on elements of dream pop and ’90s alt rock, all the while remaining, well, a bit of an earworm. Whether it be the song’s ambitious arrangement, his chaotically composed performance or the high level level of color and texture lurking in the details, there’s a lot here to rave about, not the least of which is Leima himself. Have any doubts? Listen for yourself below.

Post Habitual is the follow-up to Dream Culture’s 2014 self-titled debut and is being released by MOEKE Records. For those wanting to catch the band with its current lineup, tonight’s release show at the Caledonia Lounge is your final shot. Word is that this is the last performance that will include bassist Kevin Hargita and keyboardist Shane Perryman who are moving on from the band.

Dream Culture celebrate the release of Post Habitual tonight at the Caledonia Lounge. Supporting them will be King Guru, Funkasaurus Wrex and Jack’s Johnson. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 for 21+ and $7 for $18+.
