From the moment that people started buzzing about a new self-titled Cinemechanica record, all signs pointed to a juggernaut of an album. First, there was the mysterious release of foreboding album art, followed by news that Kevin Ratterman (Young Widows) recorded the album and Kurt Ballou (Converge) mixed the LP. To top it all off, the band announced that Bryan Aiken (Lazer/Wulf) would be touring with the band on guitar. The new track, “Vietnamese Pool Party” confirms every suspicion that Cinemechanica is back in full force. Put simply, it’s a blast of metallic noise with a razor-sharp edge, cutting through labels like math rock and post-hardcore with absolute abandon.
Fans of the group have been starved for a studio release for 8 years now, and many had given up any hope of a new record. In one sense, “Vietnamese Pool Party” is vindication for everyone who believed that Cinemechanica could still produce skull-crushing, ultra-detailed songs which never get lost in their own intricacies.
For a band never short on ideas, the decade gap between their upcoming record and their last LP, The Martial Arts, means that we can look forward to a wild and weird mix of tracks with titles like “Grief Assassins” and “Biblical Noise.” Still, there has always been a consistent integrity to the four-piece, an immediacy which unites all their tracks under one cacophonous umbrella. Within the build-up for the new album, Cinemechanica raised the stakes for the final product, and with “Vietnamese Pool Party,” they proved they can deliver.
