If you’re searching for some deeper meaning within “Illiterate,” the new collaborative track between BOREGARD. and fellow up-and-comer Kenny Mason, don’t bother. After all, sometimes cats just want to go dumb on an instrumental. That’s not to say, however, that there isn’t anything of substance behind the cut, or that flexing for the sake of fun isn’t a worthwhile pursuit. On the contrary, the pairing of the two aspiring ATL rappers is a fortuitous one as the duo trade witty barbs and surreal one-liners (“I’m in this bitch like a puppy skeleton”) while A1Devin’s chunky synthesizers and staccato drums reverberate in the background. Indeed, if there’s a takeaway here it’s how well they complement each other’s better instincts with BOREGARD.’s playful couplets serving as the perfect lead-in to Mason’s more mercurial flow. Team-ups often have the effect of elevating one artist over another, but here the scales come out balanced. In short: more of this collabo, please.
