There’s a quiet beauty that resonates within Alexis Roberts’ voice. It’s not so much a question of her tone or timbre as it is her delivery — the hushed grace, the subtle pauses, the timely emphasis on critical phrases. Roberts makes all the right decisions on her debut single, “Play House,” and the result is a haunting, elegiac pop ballad that will remind many of Lorde’s transcendent minimalism. All told, it’s a stunning first effort made all the more remarkable because it arrives seemingly out of nowhere without the usual PR machinations and media constructed buzz that you’d expect from track of this caliber. There’s no telling where Roberts will go from here — word is she’s working on an accompanying video — but for now she has our full attention. You would do well to give her yours as well.
